Contest Pet Peeves!

Have something that drives you crazy about Toastmaster contests? Send it to me by E-mail and I'll post it here!

  • When things aren't planned in advance.

  • When clubs don't offer trophies for the winners.

  • When contestants are not instructed properly. An example of this would be when you see one table topics contestant walk up to the front of the room before being introduced and then the second topics contestant is standing at the door waiting to be introduced. Neither is wrong but both should be instructed to do the same.

  • When contestants go over time because they were not shown where the timing lights were.

  • When speeches are assigned to present first before the evaluation contest or table topics contest. The speeches are the highlight, the main event, and should be treated as such.

  • When the audience munches loudly on potato chips for the duration of the first two contestant presentations but then the room is nice and quiet for the last contestants. This is a great example of how the audience has an interactive responsibility to help provide an equal platform for the contest.

  • When Area Governors don't promote the where's and when's of the Area contest until the day of the contest or the day before.

  • When the Area Governor doesn't show up to his own area contest and nobody knows what's going on.

  • When club members don't support their winners by attending the contest at the next level.
